Who runs this site
Grown Where is a free, independent website operated by Patrick Stevens ("we", "us"), based in Washington State, United States.
The data and our work with it
The figures come from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS): the Census of Agriculture and NASS's annual estimates, published in Quick Stats. Official figures are what NASS publishes. Everything we build from them is our own independent work and hasn't been reviewed by USDA or NASS. That includes shares, rankings, rounding, unit conversions, maps, color scales, rules for choosing which source answers a question, groupings of foods into meals, and the sentences generated from the data. See Sources and methodology for definitions and limits.
NASS estimates are statistical estimates, not exact counts, and NASS revises them. Some figures are withheld by NASS to protect individual farms, and the Census of Agriculture is taken only every five years, so some figures on this site are several years old. Each number is labeled with its source and year.
Not affiliated with USDA
Grown Where is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the US Department of Agriculture, NASS or any other government agency. Crediting NASS as our source doesn't imply that they endorse the site, its analysis or its conclusions.
No warranty
The site and everything on it are provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, completeness, timeliness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We work to keep the figures accurate, but we don't guarantee that they're correct, complete or current, or that the site will be available, uninterrupted or free of errors.
Not advice
Nothing on Grown Where is agricultural, business, financial, investment, commodity-trading, legal, nutritional or food-safety advice. The figures describe where crops and animals are produced. They don't tell you where the food in a particular store came from, and the site isn't a source for product origin labels, recalls or food-safety information. If a decision depends on these numbers, check the original NASS data and talk to a qualified professional.
Limitation of liability
The site is free. To the fullest extent the law allows, Patrick Stevens won't be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the site, your inability to use it, or your reliance on anything on it, even if we were told such damages were possible. To the same extent, our total liability for any claim relating to the site is limited to US$50.
Some places don't allow these exclusions or limits, so some of them may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have that can't be limited by law.
Using the site
Please don't use the site in a way that breaks the law, interferes with its operation (for example, automated requests at a volume that slows it down), tries to get around its security, or presents our work or the site as endorsed by USDA, NASS or us when it isn't.
Citing and reusing
You're welcome to link to the site and to quote, chart and republish figures and short excerpts from it, with credit to Grown Where and to the original source, "USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service." The underlying NASS data is in the public domain and doesn't need our permission.
The site's original text, charts, maps, code and design are © 2026 Patrick Stevens. We don't claim ownership of NASS data or of US Census Bureau map boundaries, which are in the public domain. Open-source software and fonts used by the site are listed with their licenses on the third-party licenses page.
Names and trademarks
Holiday, event, product and company names are used only to describe the foods and data they refer to. They belong to their owners, and their use doesn't imply any affiliation or endorsement. For example, Super Bowl is a trademark of the National Football League, which is not affiliated with Grown Where.
Links to other sites
We link to other websites, including USDA and our sister sites. We aren't responsible for their content, availability or practices.

We may update these terms or change or discontinue the site at any time. When we update the terms, we'll change the date at the top. Continuing to use the site means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Washington State, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
